Did I Make Money Today? A Driver and an AI Do the Math

I left home to make money. I don't have a shop; I drive. In a shop only the rent works against you. In a car, everything does.

Tonight I sat down with an AI that had followed the whole day, and we counted. Tap a box to open it.

The Driver | AI - Story Teller

322 km · 9 rides · Lyft paid $263.30. After HST, tolls and the car: $132.79 for 9¼ hours, $14.36/h before income tax. Ontario minimum wage: $17.60/h.

🚗 The day — 9 rides

The first ride was the big one: Kitchener to Toronto, 130 km, $146. Then the rhythm of the job: a passenger, a gap, a passenger, a gap. The last drop-off was at 9:56 pm. Then 82 km home, unpaid.

With a passenger: 216 km. Empty: 106 km. Total: 322 km. Time with a passenger: 5h 47m, out of about 9¼ hours on the road (2 pm to 11:15 pm, from the recordings). Source: Lyft driving history, 12 Sep 2026.

✈️ Under the planes at Pearson

Around 4:30 pm the 401 runs under the approach path of Toronto Pearson, Canada's busiest airport: 47.3 million passengers in 2025, a landing about every ninety seconds.

Two years ago that sky meant delays; Canada was short of air traffic controllers. This summer, during the World Cup, control-related delays at the four biggest airports fell 91 per cent. NAV CANADA is still about 200 controllers short. Waiting does not write kilometres. It writes hours.

💬 From the conversation

MUAZ
I left home this morning to make money. Tonight I want to know if I did.

AI
Then let's do the numbers together. I followed the whole day: the stream, the recordings, the clock.

MUAZ
Nobody pays for the road back. That's the job.

AI
Waiting doesn't write kilometres. It writes hours. I'll count the hours too.

MUAZ
The lights are beautiful. I look at the meter.

AI
About a hundred dollars a day, customer or no customer.

MUAZ
Tomorrow I'll turn the key again.

💵 From Lyft's number to what is mine

Lyft's daily total is not all yours. It includes HST that belongs to the government and tolls that only pay back what you already paid. You can claim back the HST you paid on business costs (input tax credits).

Lyft net earnings$263.30
HST collected (goes to CRA)-$33.96
Tolls (repays what you paid)-$11.59
HST you claim back (estimate)+$9.77
Business income$227.52
Car costs-$94.73
Profit before income tax$132.79
Income tax + CPP (~31%)-$41.16
Left in the pocket≈ $91.63

ITC ≈ $3.66 + 11.5% × ($33.81 + $6.44 + $12.88)

⏱️ Per hour, against minimum wage

The red line is Ontario's minimum wage.

Lyft number$28.46Business income$24.60Before income tax$14.36After tax + CPP$9.91min. wage $17.60
$263.30 ÷ 9.25 h = $28.46/h
$227.52 ÷ 9.25 h = $24.60/h
$132.79 ÷ 9.25 h = $14.36/h
$91.63 ÷ 9.25 h = $9.91/h

On Lyft's number I am well above minimum wage. Once the government's HST and the car are taken out, I am below it.

Ontario's platform-worker law guarantees minimum wage only for engaged time, from accepting a ride to the drop-off. The gaps and the 106 empty kilometres are not covered.

🧾 Tax: what the tax office sees

For the Canada Revenue Agency a rideshare driver is a business: income and expenses go on form T2125.

Car costs count only with a kilometre logbook and receipts, in proportion to business use.

HST: rideshare drivers must register from the first dollar. Ontario HST is 13 per cent; you remit what you collected and claim back what you paid.

CPP: self-employed, you pay both the employee and employer share, about 11.9 per cent of net income. Estimated here together with income tax at about 31 per cent.

Yes, on paper. Once the car and the government have taken their share, I worked for less than minimum wage.

That is why a driver cannot just watch the world go by. A driver counts. Tomorrow I will turn the key again.
